Expertise in Teaching Certificate

Audience: Practising teachers, middle leaders, senior leaders with classroom teaching responsibilities

Overview

The Expertise in Teaching Certificate empowers you to embed evidence-informed pedagogical approaches and showcase your teaching expertise as you explore education research and apply what you learn directly to your classroom practice, tailoring this to your context to make a real difference to the pupils you teach.

Designed to fit with your existing professional development priorities, this certified CPD unit enables you to elevate your expertise and focus on an aspect of pedagogy that is important to you. You will engage with research and evidence to build your understanding of effective practice in relation to your chosen pedagogical focus. You’ll then dedicate time to apply what you have learnt utilising deliberate practice, a high-impact professional development approach centred around taking practical action in your classroom; you will identify clear goals that will help you to systematically hone your skills and embed your chosen approach within your teaching, adding to your pedagogical repertoire.

This is an assessed unit, requiring you to submit a developing teaching portfolio for assessment, incorporating two written reflections, an evidence-informed action plan, and a short recorded video presentation. The assessment has been designed to support your development in a meaningful way, with the option to focus on developing an aspect of professional development that you think will make a difference for you and your context. Successful completion of the assessment provides 20 credits towards Chartered Teacher Status. Detailed assessment guidance, supporting tools and templates are provided.

My favourite unit was the Development of Teaching Practice Award. It gave me the opportunity to have lesson observations and watch other teachers, to write reflections, to engage in debates, and to use cognitive science in my practice. I think the unit is very valuable.

This assessment was really interesting and the extended period to concentrate on a specific area was invaluable. I am now being asked to help other year groups and champion effective questioning.
