Royal Charter and Bye Laws

With a proud history dating back to 1849, when Queen Victoria granted the teaching profession its Royal Charter, we have been committed to supporting teachers and improving standards of teaching and learning. In 2017, this charter was entrusted to the Chartered College of Teaching, empowering us to uphold excellence through initiatives like maintaining a register of practitioners, accrediting programmes of study and awarding postnominals.

The Royal Charter is a powerful symbol of the professionalism and dedication of teachers. For nearly 170 years, it has safeguarded the integrity of the teaching profession, serving as a commitment to supporting and elevating the role of educators in society. At the Chartered College of Teaching, we are proud to carry forward this legacy, using the charter to empower teachers, uphold standards, and inspire confidence in our work as a professional body. It is both an honour and a responsibility to be the custodians of this historic trust.
