Professional Knowledge Award

Audience: Dependent on pathway, classroom teachers, middle leaders, school based mentors and senior school leaders.

The Professional Knowledge Award is an exam-based unit designed to recognise and celebrate advanced professional knowledge in teaching and learning, curriculum, and assessment. Tailored to meet the needs of different roles in education, this unit is available via three options: 

  • Professional Knowledge Award: For classroom teachers and middle leaders on our Chartered Teacher Pathway
  • Professional Knowledge Award (Mentor): For school based mentors on our Chartered Teacher (Mentor) pathway
  • Professional Knowledge Award (Leadership): For senior and executive leaders on our Chartered Teacher (Leadership) pathway. 

This allows you to choose the certified unit that best suits you and your role.

Exam Structure

As part of the Professional Knowledge Award you will undertake three exams. Each timed exam will be undertaken online and tailored to your pathway:

  1. Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) examination 
  2. Objective Structured Teaching Exercise (OSTE), a scenario-based examination.
  3. Written examination

  • Reading lists
  • Free access to a short online course The Principles of Assessment which will introduce you to assessment theory and builds your understanding of assessment purpose, reliability, assessment error and bias.

Recognition of prior learning

We offer Recognition of Prior Certificated Learning (RPCL) on this unit. Check which qualifications we accept and how to apply.

Course length

1-12 months, self-paced, online.

This unit can be completed in a term or less, however many candidates choose to undertake this unit alongside other Chartered Status units, for example completing one exam per term over three terms.
